The Commercialization of Foldable Phones

While the foldable screens may seem extremely futuristic, the time is ripe for mind-bending technology.  The mobile phone industry believes that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016. And this is not science fiction -- the technology already exists to make flexible screens. “Ideally, users would be able to fold the bendable smartphone in half and stuff it in their pockets. It’s not quite the Post-It note sized foldable smartphone of the distant future, but if Samsung can manage to do it, it will be the first of its kind.” -- Malarie Gokey, Digital Trends. Samsung and LG have already sold many smartphones with unusual shapes and attributes that are beneficial in everyday use.  Samsung's Galaxy Round has a bowed screen and back with curvy dimension and 9 active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display technology. Its design can withstand flattening and it has a scratch-resistant coating. The LG G Flex's contoured display renders media watching more immersive, and it also features a scratch-resistant coating, But they are neither flexible nor bendable -- the trick will be to make batteries and processor chips that bend too. Nonetheless, it’s fun to imagine an ecosystem chockfull of flexible screens. Samsung can manage to do it, it will be the first of its kind.” -- Malarie Gokey, Digital Trends
