Giant Robot Deathmatch Between America and Japan Is Officially Set for August

If there’s one thing that’s sorely lacking in our technology-driven modern lives, it’s giant robot fights. This is all the more disappointing considering that the technology to build Real Steel-esque robo-fighters exists, but nobody seems to want to bother actually pitting mechanized warriors against one another in a duel to the death

Until now.

About a year and a half ago, the American company Megabots challenged the Japanese company Suidobashi to a giant robot fight between their respective mechs, the Mk. II Megabot and the Kuratas. They even made a video, and got one back from Suidobashi. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Japan, remember that Japanese entertainment executives have put giant, piloted mecha in everything they can get their hands on—even Spider-Man. Giant robots are serious business.

Now, America’s Megabots have announced that their enormous new destructive robot, known as the Mk III, is ready. The fight, which has been delayed for almost a year, is now scheduled for August 2017. And this is the real deal—the Mk III can literally pick up a full sized car and tear it in half. Check out the incredibly over-the-top announcement video from Megabots (featuring American flag shirts):

After some challenge finding a venue that would let a crowd of people watch two enormous robots fight it out with flamethrowers and chainsaws, the respective parties have finally secured a location for the fight, and these two giant war machines will duke it both live and on the competing teams’ respective YouTube channels.

It’s interesting to note that the Mk III is a crowdfunded project, built thanks to an impressive $500,000 Kickstarter campaign. While the Kuratas certainly has a lot more polish to its design, looking more like a Gundam, Megabots’ bare-bones robot certainly doesn’t lack for brute strength. But no matter who wins this fight, the real winner is us, because this is now real:
