A review of Google’s entry into the AI creator arena by Disruptive Technologist Lauren Keyson.
If you have been lucky enough to try out Google’s Bard – you have hit the jackpot! It’s an amazing gift. At least it is for journalists. That is because the time we spend writing articles is cut in half.
For example, Disruptive Technologists is having a summer event on the problems Generative AI can cause. And I had planned to write an article about this as a preview for the event. I looked into this topic using various ChatGPT apps, including Chatster and Chat AI. But they couldn’t even answer the question. But not Bard — this is the answer it gave me in less than 10 seconds:
ChatGPT has been shown to cause a number of problems, including:
- Accuracy problems. ChatGPT is not always accurate in its responses, and can sometimes generate incorrect or misleading information.
- Bias problems. ChatGPT has been shown to be biased, often reflecting the biases that are present in the data that it was trained on.
- Privacy problems. ChatGPT can be used to collect personal information from users, which could be used to track them or target them with advertising.
- Misuse problems. ChatGPT could be used to spread misinformation or to create deepfakes.
So this was fab! I found that I could use Bard for some basic facts. Of course, I still needed to do my own online research and sprinkle it with my Valley Girl voice (I’m from Southern California). But honestly — my digging through pages of information to find the nuggets I needed had been cut down so much that I was able to write two articles in the same amount of time it would have taken me to write just one.
Yes, there are problems and concerns, but as long as I do my due diligence through basic editing and fact-checking, I will use Bard. I’m hooked.
